The Linux Operating system is often regarded as more secure than Microsoft Windows and is one of the reasons that it is promoted. They are written by dedicated groups of people and the code is open-source, which means anybody can analyze it for bugs, flaws, or intentional backdoors which could allow hackers to hijack a system.
Linux is gaining ever increasing popularity and more individuals are replacing their Windows or Mac installations with a free distribution of their choice. The question that needs to be asked is if Linux really is more secure than Windows? What if they were tested with white hat ethical hacking techniques? Is it safe to use online banking with vulnerable-by-default Linux distributions.
Not all distros are created equally, and not all have good security from the get-go. This book has details some of the leading Linux distributions along with less well-known ones and tells you which ones are safe, which ones need to be avoided.
How secure are penetration testing distributions and are there any rogue ones being promoted which are deliberately vulnerable so if they are used to initiate an attack, then the victim organisation or person has an easier job of retaliating against an OS with known vulnerabilities exploitable by Metasploit. Is the anonymous-OS the only malware riddled distribution to be released to trap would-be hackers or script kiddies?
This book is put together from research and practical tests I carried out as part of my university thesis and have published it on here for all to read!
Look out for my other I.T security related books that I will be soon publishing on the kindle store, that I am currently in the process of writing – Linux Security Admin
